Get Involved
Donating to this operation will support Disaster Relief Australia volunteers in real and practical ways.
Objective
Disaster Relief Australia (DRA)’s Melbourne DRT, is collaborating with the community of Yinnar South, Latrobe Valley and the DRA National Training Team with the aim to train DRA members in Chainsaw Operator Level 1 & 2 skills and for experienced chainsaw operators to refresh their skills helping this community in their path to recovery.
On 3 March 2019, a lightning strike started a bushfire at Yinnar South. The fire burned through 1,913 hectares impacting the Budgeree, Jumbuk and Yinnar South areas, destroying two homes and three outbuildings including the Jumbuk Hall. Due to steep terrain the bushfire was not declared contained until over a month later.
Members will assist in clearing properties in support of bushfire survivors in the Latrobe Valley, participating in recovery works to re-establish amenities and facilities along The Grand Strzelecki Track. Members have the opportunity to gain experience in DRA’s various operational roles by heading to Yinnar South for the extended weekend with the opportunity to camp out on site during this time.
Update
Due to Covid-19 complications, DRA was forced to put this Service Project on hold. Disaster Relief Australia is dedicated to come back into the community to provide recovery works including debris removal, chainsaw work & repairs to fence lines.
