Engagement Project – Cairns Veteran Assistance
Disaster Relief Australia volunteers from North Queensland conducted a one-day Engagement Project in Cairns, to support a veteran referred by the local RSL.
The project involved clearing overgrown vegetation, pruning trees, and using a brush cutter to manage long grass. Volunteers also sorted and removed accumulated items, creating a safe and usable space for the veteran’s children while respecting the significance of personal belongings.
The activity was supported by a mix of Cairns-based volunteers and six members who travelled from Townsville. The project also formed part of an Operational Skills Training (OST) event for North Queensland volunteers, covering skills in planning, safety briefings, and operational coordination.
