I previously served as a rifleman with the 8th/9th RAR at Gallipoli Barracks in Enoggera, Brisbane. Like many veterans and first responders, I felt a bit lost after leaving the service. I was looking for a way to stay connected and desired to give back.
I first discovered DRA in December 2018 and have since deployed on multiple operations across Australia. Over the years, I’ve taken on a range of roles, including Chainsaw Operator, Strike Team Leader, Damage Assessor, Operations Associate, Chainsaw Capability Owner and part of the QLD South – Disaster Relief Recovery Team (DRRT) leadership team. More recently, I’ve also moved into Logistics and Coordination positions.
What keeps me coming back is the shared sense of purpose, mateship and belonging. There’s something genuinely fulfilling about working alongside like-minded people, united by the goal of helping others. I enjoy the structure, the clarity of roles, the rhythm of deployments — and of course, the camaraderie and banter.
One moment that really stuck with me was during Operation Locke in Taree. I was the Logistics Officer for Wave 6 and had ducked out to grab groceries for the team. People were looking at me a little differently — and then it hit me: I was wearing my DRA shirt. Strangers were thanking me — not just for what I was doing that day, but for what DRA stands for. It was a proud moment that reminded me why this work matters.
In 2024, I joined DRA full-time as the Logistics & National Operations Centre Coordinator, while continuing to volunteer in the field whenever I can. I have two favourite roles: this current position and being a Chainsaw Operator — both give me a real sense of purpose, knowing that what I do makes a tangible difference.
Outside of work and volunteering, you’ll likely find me rock climbing, walking my dog, training in jujitsu, or spending time with my family.
Right now is a great time to get involved with DRA. We’re growing fast, becoming more efficient, and building a team that’s not just effective — but fun to be around. You’ll build strong connections, learn new skills, and make friendships that last a lifetime.
Mitch.
