Safe Volunteering: Don’t Forget Your Tetanus Shot

bridgetteali | January 2025

At Disaster Relief Australia (DRA) the health and safety of volunteers is as important as the health and safety of those impacted by disaster. Protection against harmful bacterial diseases, such as Tetanus, is essential for all Disaster Relief Australia (DRA) volunteers.

Why are Tetanus vaccinations so important?

Tetanus is a serious condition that is commonly contracted through contact with contaminated soil, dust and manure. While Australia’s Tetanus vaccination rates are high, there is still a risk when travelling to disaster-affected areas. Ensuring your Tetanus vaccination is up to date allows you to deploy with DRA, as we often operate in rugged and unpredictable environments, where even small cuts or scratches can put you at risk.

Your safety is our priority

In line with our safety standards and the Australian Immunisation Handbook guidance for emergency and essential workers, we require all volunteers to have received a Tetanus vaccination within the last 10 years to attend training sessions, such as chainsaw and four-wheel driving, and for operational deployment. The higher-risk nature and location of our operations means our preference is that our volunteers receive a Tetanus vaccination every five years.

Are you up to date with your vaccinations?

Want to volunteer with us but unsure of your vaccination history? Follow the steps below to ensure you align with our requirements.

Check your vaccination history

Unsure of your last Tetanus shot? MyGov allows you to review your vaccination history. By logging in, you’ll be able to see the exact date of your last vaccination and confirm when you are due for your next one.

Book an appointment

We can provide a letter of support to your GP or pharmacist if you require a Tetanus vaccination. This letter requests a bulk-billed consultation, however fees will be at the discretion of your vaccine provider.

Update your volunteer profile

Once you’ve received your vaccination, update your DRA Muster profile with this latest information. This will help maintain compliance and provide easier tracking for when you are due for future vaccinations.

Stay up to date, stay prepared

Keeping up to date with your vaccinations is just as important a step as completing the required training or packing the right clothing for deployment. By remaining proactive about your vaccinations, you will find it easier to attend volunteer and training requests.

At DRA, we take your health and safety seriously and want you to feel safe and supported while you do the same for others. Volunteer disaster relief work is rewarding, and staying protected ensures you will be able to work to the best of your ability.
