Kangaroo Island Resilience Project
During the 2019-2020 Black summer bushfire season, fires raged through the northern and western areas of Kangaroo Island, extensively damaging bushland, farming land, residential and commercial infrastructure. It is understood that 38 percent of the Island was burnt out, with the heaviest damage extending from the centre of the island through to the western end.
Disaster Relief Australia previously conducted two national operations on Kangaroo Island to assist with the recovery from the Black Summer Fires. Both Operation Turner and Operation Tiger in 2020 were cut short due to Covid-19.
In March of 2022, our operations team re-visited the island to reassess previous unfinished taskings to also complete further damage assessments on properties that still require assistance. DRA once again provided assistance to complete the recovery work along with resilience work in the areas that will once again be at risk when the next bushfire season arrives.
Work included:
• Fencing repair and removal
• Refurbishment of burnt vegetable and animal enclosures
• Debris removal
DRA’s SA Disaster Relief Team assisted communities across Kangaroo Island area following devastating bushfires in 2020.
